Panic Disorder Treatments – Finally Stop Your Panic Attacks
Having a panic disorder is just another label for suffering from frequent panic attacks. “Just” probably seems out of place to any panic attack sufferer, but panic attacks need to be taken down a few notches in your mind. Knowing that they aren’t fatal and you’ll be fine helps you gain more control over them. No matter how you look at it, this is something no one should live with though. The first treatment option everyone seems to want to go to is the pharmaceutical route. The idea of a magic pill is always appealing. It usually doesn’t turn out as perfect as that though. Such medication messes with your brain chemistry to try and prevent panic attacks by reducing anxiety. It is still possible to have them on the medication, but not as likely. This route works for some people, but I don’t like it for a few reasons. Such medicine can have unforeseen side effects. These side effects can be extreme or pop up years later as most of these medications haven’t been on the market enough to accurately gauge how they will affect patients long term. And since the underlying cause is never taken care of, you do have to continue taking them forever. You’re more likely to have a panic attack if you ever find yourself without them because you no longer know how to cope. They are just a crutch. Medication isn’t cheap either.
The second category is partially helpful, but not a cure. Basically this is the recommendation of getting sleep, staying away from mood-altering substances, exercising, and trying to stay away from stressful situations. These approaches and actions do help, but they will not stop your panic attacks alone; stay away from anyone who tells you otherwise.
The third category can be a cure as it addresses what goes on inside your head. There are a few options under this category though, some of them are just as horrible as any others.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the more commonly known ones. This basically works as follows: a therapist will try and discover what patterns and situations have caused panic attacks, show you breathing exercises, try to lower the anxiety of these situations and gradually reintroduce you to such situations. I’ve seen it said that in order to work it requires a motivated patient and a specially trained therapist. You will rarely see any results in the first two months, sometimes it can be substantially longer.
That’s how my research of it presented it, but here’s how it translates. This method takes time, potentially lots of it. The requirement of a specially trained therapist means it’ll be expensive as well. I’d assume all panic disorder sufferers are motivated to get their panic attacks to stop, so this sounds very questionable. It may not work very well with new experiences or situations. This doesn’t sound like a winner either.
The other option that we’ll cover strikes at the root cause of your panic attacks. While any number of things can cause your first panic attack, once you’ve experienced it you have many more. This is because you remember the experience, knowing it could happen, and you worry about it. This means you’re constantly more tense and closer to having a panic attack. Change this and you can regain control.
